Juicy Lips
Sandra Gonzalez brought us on to bring her song Juicy Lips to life in a way that made it seem like the viewer rediscovered a lost early MTV music video. To nail this effect, we transferred the video to VHS on a VCR, then back to digital, instead of using a fake VHS overlay or preset. Since VHS is limited to a 4:3 aspect ratio, we had to squeeze the video to fit, then de-squeeze the VHS recording back to our desired ultra wide aspect ratio in order to preserve the resolution. To maximize the number of glitches, we recorded over 10 versions onto VHS tape, and then cut them all together, in addition to rerecording several times in the same area of tape to degrade the signal further.
